2017 NFL Draft: Jake Wieneke is the Next FCS Prodigy

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Jake Wieneke will be the Carson Wentz of the 2017 NFL Draft, but no one knows it yet

NFL teams are always searching for a steal in the NFL Draft. Many believed Carson Wentz’s name would never surface and they could draft a star in the mid-rounds. Thanks to the internet, no one can be kept a secret for long.

South Dakota State wide receiver Jake Wieneke will be the next star born out of the FCS. He currently leads all FCS wide receivers with 12 touchdowns in seven games, and is a force to be reckoned with.

Wieneke is a prototypical 6’4 receiver with a vacuum for hands. Against TCU he caught nearly every ball thrown his way, no matter how erratic the ball arrived.

His route running is smooth, he can high-point the football, and he fights for the ball on every drive.

In 33 collegiate games, the All-American has 39 touchdowns and over 3,600 receiving yards.

More from NFL Mocks

Unless an NFL team or the media discovers him and his name gets plastered across the world, an NFL team will be thrilled to draft Jake Wieneke in the middle rounds next year.

If anyone attempts to downplay the kids talent because he plays for South Dakota State, I’ll point you to the tape. He is making superb catches and using his length to take advantage of smaller defensive backs.

We have seen Joe Flacco, Carson Wentz, Tony Romo, Robert Mathis, and Jahri Evans come out of smaller schools and play better than anyone in the NFL.

Should Jake Wieneke get a chance to play at the next level, his name could certainly be on that list of top FCS alumni in the NFL.
