49ers might look to boost secondary on Day 2 of NFL draft

SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) Former defensive line coach and new 49ers top man Jim Tomsula has a new defensive lineman after the 49ers selected Arik Armstead with the 17th overall pick in Thursday's first round of the NFL draft.

Next, Tomsula and general manager Trent Baalke will likely look to upgrade the Niners' secondary as they prepare for the second round with the 46th overall choice Friday.

San Francisco again watched key defensive backs depart this offseason, so adding options to complement projected starting cornerbacks Tramaine Brock and Shareece Wright is important.

Cornerbacks Perrish Cox and Chris Culliver each left in free agency, leaving the 49ers again to build depth at the position through the draft.
