A tribute to Jeremiah Trotter: Thoughts on "The Axe Man"

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Monday night long-time Eagles announcer Merrill Reese and three-time Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter will be inducted into the team’s hall of fame.

Certain guys were just born to play for the Philadelphia Eagles. There aren’t too many better examples of that than Jeremiah Trotter. His eight seasons with the team covered three tours of duty, and even though we all may have different memories of “The Axe Man”, none of us will forget what he meant to this organization. It’s only fitting that the Eagles place him into the team’s hall of fame on Monday night.

Whether it was at Veteran’s Stadium or Lincoln Financial Field, each time “Trot” (as he was affectionately known by teammates) swung his imaginary ax in celebration, we swung one ourselves. On three separate occasions, he lent his efforts, talents and leadership to this organization. He helped resurrect a struggling Eagles franchise in the beginning of his career. Later, he’d become one of the leaders on a defense that would push the Eagles to the elite level, culminating in a Super Bowl appearance.

Trotter is an Eagle in every sense of the word, and a stint with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers won’t change that. Neither will former head coach Andy Reid‘s revolving door at linebacker that landed him in our nation’s capital for a tour of duty with the Washington Redskins. Trotter only seemed at home with the Eagles. His teammates loved him, and so did the fans

    Take a look:

His resume includes four NFL Pro Bowl appearances (all with the Eagles), 636 tackles, 12.5 sacks and nine interceptions. He may not be mentioned when we talk about NFL greats who will wind up at Canton, Ohio, but football immortality with the the Eagles doesn’t even need to be debated. He goes into the Eagles’ Hall of Fame on Monday.

    Congratulations.
