Bears fans: Other Bears fan stabbed us for saying Packers are awesome

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 4:04 p.m. ET

Things are so bad in Chicago that Bears fans are apparently attacking each other.

A story emerged late Thursday that two Bears fans were stabbed in the Soldier Field parking lot after Chicago's 41-28 loss to the Dallas Cowboys, and police initially said the perpetrators were Cowboys fans.

That makes sense, insofar as we have seen arguments between rival fans escalate to that level plenty of times before.

But wait. One of the victims in this stabbing incident spoke to the Chicago Tribune on Friday and offered a different take. He claims they were stabbed not by Cowboys fans, but rather some of their fellow Bears fans. The reason? For saying nice things about the Packers.

"I was saying the Packers are awesome this year, why can't I be born a Packers fan?" the man, identified only as a 21-year-old from the Chicago suburb of Oak Lawn, told the Tribune.

And that's when things got dicey. From the Tribune:

The Bears and Packers, of course, are bitter NFC North rivals that are going through very different seasons. At 9-3, Green Bay leads the division, is tied for the best record in the NFC, and is considered a Super Bowl favorite. At 5-8, the Bears are busy planning January vacations.

The man and his friend, also unidentified in the story, were both treated for cut wounds at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and released. They were remarkably good-spirited about it all, saying they were "laughing" about it in the ambulance.

If the man's version is to be believed, it seems he hardly has any blame in the situation, but he still summed up the events to the Tribune by saying, "We were just idiots."

The official police report, for the record, said the incident started when some fans yelled "Bears suck!", which is what led authorities to conclude that Cowboys fans were to blame. The flawed logic there is that it is entirely possible in 2014 for a Bears fan to yell "Bears suck!"

At any rate, we are glad no one was seriously injured. This apparent Bear-on-Bear violence must stop. There's been enough of it on the field.
