Ben Roethlisberger has successful knee surgery, return date uncertain
Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger underwent successful surgery on his left knee Monday morning, according to coach Mike Tomlin.
The need for surgery to repair torn meniscus was reported by several outlets Sunday night, but Tomlin didn’t get into the nature of the procedure in his statement. He said only that the team didn’t have a timetable for Roethlisberger’s return but that it didn’t expect his absence to be long-term:
"Ben Roethlisberger underwent a successful outpatient arthoscopic surgery on his left knee this morning. He is now recovering at home and expected to make a full recovery. Though we do not know a specific timetable for when he will be able to return to the field, we are confident this injury is not long-term."
The Steelers, who dropped to 4-2 on Sunday with a surprising loss to the Dolphins, face the 5-1 Patriots on Sunday before getting a bye week. Pittsburgh then takes on Baltimore in Week 9 and Dallas in Week 10.
Roethlisberger injured his knee in the first half against Miami but missed only one series. He completed 19 of 34 passes for just 189 yards and threw two interceptions. He threw just one TD pass but leads the NFL with 16.
