Bernard Pierce grateful for another chance

Bernard Pierce considers himself fortunate to have a fresh start.

After being arrested for DUI on March 18, he was cut by the Baltimore Ravens the same day.

He wasn't out of work long, as the Jaguars quickly claimed him on waivers. Pierce told Vito Stellino of the Florida-Times Union he appreciated the second chance given to him by Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley.

“Gus asked for a brief description, and I told him and that was it, and we moved on,” Pierce said. “He said you have to make wiser decisions in the future.”

Pierce reportedly couldn't discuss details of the case since it's still pending, but the fourth-year running back told Stellino the notoriety associated with his arrest was embarrassing.

“My outlook is that nobody remembers the good things you do, but they always try to scrutinize and criticize the bad things,” Pierce said. “I made one mistake in my whole career, my whole life, and now I’m trying to build myself up.”

As for his future in Jacksonville, Pierce's role will likely be determined in part by whether the team selects a running back in the upcoming NFL Draft. The 24-year-old said his focus is on earning a roster spot.

“I don’t come in expecting anything,” Pierce said. “My standpoint is to come in and try to get a job, try to compete.”
