Bortles aims to master Jags new offense in camp

Jacksonville Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles prepares for his second training camp with the team with a simple, yet crucial goal for the month of August.

“To come out of camp with a clear ownership of the offense," Bortles said, via Ryan O'Halloran of the Florida Times-Union. "I got a brief overview of it going through the spring and had an opportunity this month to stay on top of it by continuing to review things.”

Mastering new offensive coordinator Greg Olson's scheme will be key for the 23-year-old, who struggled as rookie, throwing 11 touchdowns and 17 interceptions. Bortles spent much of the offseason refining his mechanics in the hopes of seeing better results in 2015.

With the exception of a stint playing in a celebrity golf tournament in Lake Tahoe, Nev., Bortles said spent his summer break in Jacksonville, throwing with a group of his receivers at a local high school.

The third overall pick in 2014, Bortles started 13 games as a rookie. He said he feels comfortable in his leadership role heading into camp.

“As a quarterback, it’s part of the job title and it comes with the position,” Bortles said. “This off-season was big to develop a routine and a system on how to do certain things – how to take care of my body, how to continue to watching film, how to learn. The more time you spend with the guys, the more you can lead.”
