Brandon Marshall would rather talk football, not Geno Smith

Brandon Marshall became one of the first of Geno Smith’s New York Jets teammates to come out publicly to defend the quarterback, saying he “did nothing wrong” during the infamous locker room incident. When pressed by the media Tuesday to expand upon his backing of Smith, the wide receiver attempted to turn the conversation into more football-related matters.

“I said what I had to say and, you know what, I’m excited to have another day to work,” Smith said about his comments made during an appearance on the NFL Network, per Pro Football Talk. “But what I say, my word is bond, so . . . as far from my perspective. So if you guys want to ask me any more questions about Geno, it’s not football. I think we’re wasting our time here.”

When asked why he waited so long to come out in support of Smith, who is out for an extended period after suffering a broken jaw courtesy of a punch from former teammate IK Enemkpali during a locker room altercation, Marshall said he felt making his comments on cameraprevented his words from being manipulated.

“I felt that it was an environment where the people who were watching can see my exact words,” Marshall said, per the New York Daily News’Manish Mehta. “Live television is always good, so you don’t say something and it turns into a distraction for the team. Your words get kind of twisted.”

Despite his warning about the media wasting everybody’s time discussing Smith, the inquiry continued. Marshall again expressed his frustration with the line of questioning.

“I’m ready for some football questions, man,” Marshall said. “So if you don’t want to ask me any football questions. . . .”

“I’m just ready to play ball,” Marshall said as the questions continued. “I’m ready to play ball, buddy.”

Given how the entire Smith fiasco has served as a monumental distraction for the everyone involved, it’s safe to say that Marshall is speaking on behalf of the entire organization.
