Cam Newton Injury Update: Quarterback Being Evaluated for Concussion

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton is being evaluated for a concussion after taking a huge hit to the head in Week 4 against the Atlanta Falcons

The Carolina Panthers didn’t seem to be expecting a test from the Atlanta Falcons on the road at the Georgia Dome in Week 4, but they got one. Julio Jones absolutely torched them on that side of the ball. However, the more shocking part was that star quarterback Cam Newton struggled to find success against the porous Falcons defense. Even worse, Newton seemed to suffer an injury on a big hit in the fourth quarter.

With Carolina trying to spearhead a late comeback, they scored off a Newton pass to Kelvin Benjamin. Down 24 points, they decided to go for the two-point conversion. That was when the injury seemingly occurred.

As the Panthers often do deep in their opponent’s territory, they elected to let Cam Newton keep it. He took off to the left hash mark and seemed to have an open lane into the end zone for two. However, the quarterback let up and took a big shot for his trouble, seemingly to the head. He stayed upright somehow for second and managed to get the ball over the line. Here’s a look at the play:

Newton was clearly affected by the hit and dazed it would seem. Sure enough, he was then taken to the locker room where he was evaluated for a concussion:

The quarterback stayed in the locker room for the next series to continue undergoing tests. Derek Anderson came in as the backup. We’ll be sure to keep you updated as more information becomes available.
