Cam Newton Undergoes MRI

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 8:45 p.m. ET

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton quietly underwent an MRI on Tuesday of his throwing shoulder…

When the Carolina Panthers franchise quarterback, Cam Newton, was awarded his first “rest” or “vet” day leading up to Monday night’s game against Washington the media took notice. After the hits Newton has absorbed this season coupled with a 5-8 record and only the slimmest chances of returning to the playoffs possible – plenty of reasons existed for his off day.

Being rested due to injury was not at the top of that list.

According to Bill Voth of Black and Blue Review, Newton was sent for an MRI in his throwing shoulder on Tuesday. Newton complained of soreness and to ensure there was no damage the test was administered. Fortunately, no evidence of any structural damage was observed and Newton is expected to start on Monday night.

Following Wednesday’s practice both Newton and head coach Ron Rivera addressed questions regarding the off day but neither mentioned the MRI test.

“Every now and then you’ve got to do that for him because he doesn’t take any breaks unless he has to,” Rivera said. “It was just one of those things he wanted to get out there and work, so we limited him trying to get him to take a little bit off.”

Newton came closer to addressing the test as his response to sitting out passing drills during practice is a little more clear now.

“It’s nothing to be scared about,” Newton stated.

The Carolina Panthers have been reduced to playing for pride over the remainder of the season. At even the slightest hint of an injury it would seem apparent that Newton would be shut down.

Due to the Monday night game, Carolina will issue their first league mandated injury report on Thursday. At that point Newton’s immediate future plans will be clear but currently it appears his initial analysis is correct.
