Carson Wentz: One more look at the final drive and two-point conversion attempt

Updated Mar. 5, 2020 1:07 a.m. ET

“The experience has been invaluable” said rookie quarterback Carson Wentz about the 2016 season.

Monday, debate raged all day about the two-point conversion. Some liked the decision, and some hated it. Others just didn’t like the play call. These are Philadelphia Eagles fans. What else would you expect?

One thing’s certain. You won’t get a complaint from the starting quarterback. “I loved it. I thought it showed coach’s aggressiveness and his belief in us” said Carson Wentz when asked about head coach Doug Pederson‘s decision to eschew an easy field goal and go for the win after Wentz scrambled for a touchdown to put the Eagles within one point of tying the Baltimore Ravens with seconds remaining.

To those who have complained about the play call, rest easy. As Pederson stated in a two o’clock press conference earlier today, passing was the right decision. That echoed what Wentz said following the game yesterday. Many have expressed that their belief was the best strategy should have been kicking the field goal and going to overtime. Others liked the idea of going for the win but thought, with the way Ryan Mathews was playing and with the way the Eagles’ offensive line was seizing control, running the ball was a better idea.

A second look shows the Ravens were in an all-out blitz. Running the ball would have resulted in either the back being “stuffed” or worse, a loss on the play, so the Eagles went for it. They went with a pass, and unfortunately for the Eagles, the defense made a play. Game over.

As always, the next thought is whether or not these tough losses are taking a toll on Wentz. Everybody calm down. He’s okay.

    Take a look:

No team loses a game on one play. It’s hard for some Eagles fans to realize that, but it’s the truth. When asked about the team bouncing back, Wentz gave the answer we’d expect in his usual confident tone. “We’ve got a game on Thursday”. He’s right. Baltimore is already behind them, and the hated New York Giants come to Lincoln Financial Field on Thursday. Black jerseys anyone?
