Chiefs have Derek Carr's number

The rivalry with the Kansas City Chiefs and the Oakland Raiders is historic. However, with the arrival of Derek Carr to the Oakland Raiders, the Chiefs seem to always have Carr’s number.

Oakland quarterback Derek Carr is a candidate for the MVP, at least according to some football analysts. Carr is putting up some amazing numbers when it comes to his 2016 season. He has already thrown for 3,375 yards with 24 touchdowns to only five interceptions. Completing 65% of his passes so far in 2016 his QBR of 100.3 is ranked in the top seven among all the active 2016 quarterbacks.

Compared those to Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith and there are some big differences. Smith has thrown for 2,567 yards, with 11 touchdowns and 4 interceptions. While his QBR is decent at 92.5, Smith is right in the middle of the pack of quarterbacks. Even still the Chiefs Kingdom has come to expect this from their quarterback, not bad, not super, but good enough to win games.

So when it comes to this “MVP”, historically he has not fared well when it comes to facing off against the Chiefs.

In the five times that Carr has faced the Chiefs, both at home and in Arrowhead, his stats don’t read like a player possibly on the short list for MVP of the league. In those five games Carr averages 219 yards per game, with a completion percentage of 57 percent. He has thrown only six touchdowns to five interceptions. He has also lost four straight games, including one this year in which his QBR was only 31.4.

Carr is a good quarterback and perhaps the best Raider to play the position since Rich Gannon. He has 10 comebacks this season, including last week when they scored 15 points in the fourth quarter to seal the victory against the Buffalo Bills. However, even with his impressive stats there is always something about playing the Chiefs that he has given the quarterback a tough time.

Now Derek Carr and the Oakland Raiders come into the most hostile field for opposing teams in the NFL, Arrowhead and the home of the Chiefs Kingdom. This game is more than just a rivalry, this is bragging right for the 2016 NFL season. The Chiefs are playing for first place in the AFC West and the possibility of home field advantage in the 2016 playoffs; and Oakland is as well. Many fans have said, it does not matter the Chiefs season as long as they beat Oakland, and never more does that ring true than the battle for first place in the AFC West.
