Chip Kelly: Cowboys offense still dangerous, even without Dez
The Dallas Cowboys obviously suffered a significant blow when Dez Bryant was injured in a Week 1 victory over the New York Giants. And with the dangerous wide receiver out for the foreseeable future, some pundits have suggested the Cowboys offense will be far less potent without him lining up on the outside. Chip Kelly isn’t among those in that camp.
The Philadelphia Eagles head coach, while acknowledging Bryant is a force to be reckoned with at wide receiver, insisted the Cowboys are still fully capable of marching up and down the field even with Bryant on the sideline following his foot surgery earlier this week.
“He’s as talented a receiver as there is in the league,’’ Kelly said. “But saying that, it’s not like they don’t have other weapons. They have Jason Witten and Cole Beasley and Terrance Williams. And they have one of the best quarterbacks in the league running the show.
“So, you’re losing a dynamic football player. But it’s not like there’s a huge discrepancy (in their offense) when they have other people in there.”
Kelly noted it’s the guy throwing the football, Tony Romo, that is making the Cowboys offense hit on all cylinders.
“The key to that offense is the quarterback,” he said. “He’s playing at a really high level right now.’’
Kelly is correct that the Cowboys still have plenty of weapons on offense at Romo’s disposal and it’s not like he was going to suggest the Eagles have a victory sewn up due to Bryant being out. But obviously the Eagles are better off facing a Cowboys team without Bryant, especially given how cornerback Byron Maxwell struggled mightily against Julio Jones in the team’s loss to the Atlanta Falcons Monday night.
In other words, it’s safe to say the Eagles caught a huge break by catching the Cowboys without their most dynamic offensive player.
