Chip Kelly says Colin Kaepernick is the backup because he's not '100 percent'

Through three weeks, San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly has stuck by Blaine Gabbert as the starting quarterback. Gabbert has played poorly thus far, completing just 55.2 percent of his passes with three touchdowns, three interceptions and a passer rating of 68.6. His passer rating is third-worst among starting quarterbacks and it's led some to call for Colin Kaepernick to start.

Michael Bennett, for one, believes the 49ers would be better with Kaepernick under center. Fans around the league believe the same, and it's very possible Kelly does too. He hinted that Kaepernick will be the starter fairly soon, and would be if he were 100 percent.

It's hard to imagine Kaepernick being any worse than Gabbert has been in 2016, and his mobility would bring a different element to the offense. At this point, it sounds like Kaepernick will be the starter sooner rather than later, assuming he recovers from his shoulder injury in the near future.

As for Gabbert, it's clear Kelly is underwhelmed by his play --€“ and understandably so. The 49ers aren't going to win games with the way he's performed this season.
