Cleveland Browns: Cody Kessler Out With Concussion

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Cody Kessler looked sharp today against the Cincinnati Bengals, but his day ended before halftime.

Cleveland Browns QB Cody Kessler was injured in the team’s Week 5 loss to the New England Patriots, but he played through the pain in Week 6. Despite the rib injury, Kessler put together a fantastic game against the Tennessee Titans. He threw for over 300 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions, pushing his yards per attempt average on the season to 7.1.

Kessler hadn’t been lighting up the Cincinnati Bengals defense today, but he was playing a clean game. The owner of a 9-for-11 passing line, Kessler averaged 7.5 yards per attempt and had a good connection with tight end Gary Barnidge.

Unfortunately, the Browns have been forced to rule Kessler out for the remainder of the game with a concussion.

It’s sad news for Kessler and the Browns, who are now starting another rookie in Kevin Hogan at QB. The Browns are down 21-10 at the half after previously holding a lead, and it looks like they have no answers for wide receivers A.J. Green and Brandon LaFell. Both players have already combined for 189 receiving yards today.

Kessler and the Browns must face the New York Jets next week, but it’s anyone’s guess when the former USC standout will be able to return to the field. He could be back for Week 8 or the concussion could cause him to miss multiple weeks. Concussions are always tricky, in addition to being scary.

Hogan would figure to keep starting if Kessler misses more time, and his rushing ability can be a big asset for Isaiah Crowell and the Browns offense.
