Cleveland Browns: Corey Coleman reportedly has broken hand

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com is reporting that Cleveland Browns rookie wide receiver Corey Coleman suffered a broken hand during Wednesday’s practice.

The Cleveland Browns cannot have nice things.

Josh McCown had a great game Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens, only to be ruled out this week due to a shoulder injury. Rookie Corey Coleman also put up a great performance with two first-quarter touchdown catches, and seemed to be a bright spot in an otherwise dismal loss. Then Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com tweeted out some dreadful news.

So there you have it. The team will enter Sunday’s game against the Miami Dolphins without the opening day starters at quarterback, center and wide receiver. Cabot explains how there is still no knowledge of how much time he will miss, but obviously any injury to a receiver’s hand is a terrible sign.

It is a devastating injury not only for the offense, but for Coleman’s development as a receiver. He will hopefully be able to bounce back upon his return, but last week’s two-touchdown game made it clear he was just beginning to show the talent he has.

Terrelle Pryor will now be the team’s top option at receiver, at least until Josh Gordon returns in Week 5. There will also be added pressure on the other rookie receivers who were drafted. Ricardo Louis, Rashard Higgins and Jordan Payton have yet to record a catch this season, which may change come Sunday.

This is another unfortunate injury and one that is going to have clear, negative effects on the offense, which is being led by a rookie, Cody Kessler. Now without the team’s top two targets, and the starting center, Kessler is making his NFL debut at a time when success seems impossible.

While winning should always be the goal, the Browns may consider Sunday a success if everyone just stays healthy. That is the kind of season it has become after just two games.
