Commanders' Brian Robinson Jr. released from hospital after shooting

Washington Commanders rookie running back Brian Robinson Jr. was released from the hospital Monday after he was shot during an attempted robbery Sunday night, the team said.

It remains unclear when Robinson will be able to return to the playing field, but he's scheduled to meet with doctors Tuesday to determine a rehab schedule. Washington is optimistic about his chances to play this season.

The 23-year-old former Alabama player was taken to a hospital with what the team called non-life-threatening injuries. The team said in a statement that staff members were with Robinson at the hospital.

Commanders coach Ron Rivera on Monday morning told reporters that Robinson is "doing well" and was "in a really good place" when he visited Robinson in the hospital Sunday night.

Robinson shared a post on Instagram announcing his "surgery went well."

D.C. police reported a shooting in the northeast section of the city and said it was on the lookout for two possible suspects.

Robinson, a third-round draft pick, was expected to start for the Commanders this season. He had been particularly impressive during training camp and preseason games, likely earning the job over incumbent Antonio Gibson.

The Commanders held a team meeting before Monday's practice to discuss what happened with Robinson.

"I know their hearts are heavy right now," Rivera said of his players. "But we're very fortunate. ... A lot of the news was positive. It's just about the healing process, and once he's well enough to get on the field, doctors have to clear him and we'll go from there. Everything is positive so far."

Robinson had just traveled with the team for its preseason finale at Baltimore on Saturday night but did not dress.

The 6-foot-1, 228-pound back rushed for 1,343 yards and 14 touchdowns last season at Alabama. The Commanders selected him with the 98th pick in the draft.

Rivera said there's a chance Robinson could return this season and that he expects to learn more about his status following an exam Monday. Robinson could be placed on the non-football injury list, which would sideline him for at least four games.

The Metro Police Department released photos of two suspects believed to be teenagers on its Twitter feed Monday, and department director of communications Dustin Sternbeck is describing the incident as an aggravated assault.

The investigation remains ongoing.
