Cops incorrectly tweet that Broncos DB is arrested, quickly apologize

A member of the Dallas Police Department quickly issued an apology to Aqib Talib on Sunday, after earlier in the day incorrectly reporting on Twitter that the Denver Broncos cornerback was arrested for public intoxication at a Dallas nightclub after "throwing bottles" and "causing a disturbance."

Early Sunday morning, Dallas PD Maj. Max Geron, whose Twitter bio describes him as, "Major in charge of the Media Relations Unit, Community Affairs and Planning Unit of the Dallas Police Department http://www.facebook.com/DallasPD," sent the following tweets, which have since been deleted:

Shortly after the tweets, however, Todd France, Talib's agent, told ProFootballTalk that the police were in error and that it was Talib's brother, Yaqub Talib, who was arrested.

Less than an hour after the PFT report, Geron posted the following tweet, also since deleted:

In the middle of the mix-up, the Denver Broncos reached out to Aqib Talib to confirm the misidentification and found the DB to be in the place the franchise probably would most prefer him to be.

Then the Broncos media relations director took some time to chide the Dallas PD.

Later, Geron reportedly blamed the error on an internal email he received which did identify the suspect as "Denver Bronco Aqib Talib." (Note: All links to Geron's response also lead to since-deleted Twitter posts.)

The Dallas CBS affiliate reported that the Dallas PD released a statement that read in part: "We regret that this incorrect information was sent and extend our apologies to Mr. Aqib Talib." The report also stated that police said the initial tweet was sent out "not keeping with normal protocol."

Talib, 28, signed a six-year deal with the Denver Broncos in the offseason. Last season, Talib's sixth in the NFL, was perhaps his best. In 13 regular-season games with the Patriots, Talib had 38 tackles, one forced fumble, four interceptions and 13 pass defenses. The effort earned him his first Pro Bowl appearance. His last game actually came in Denver, where he left the AFC Championship Game against the Broncos in the second quarter with a knee injury.
