Could Darryl Roberts be a sleeper pick?

The New York Jets made an interesting pickup this week in cornerback Darryl Roberts. Could he be a sleeper pick to make some noise this upcoming season?

Waiver wire pickups are not seen as important. They are mainly seen as signings that are used strictly to fill the roster. However, the secondary situation of the New York Jets has become more open with the waiving of Dexter McDougle, a lack of depth at safety, and Dee Milliner being placed on IR.

Darrelle Revis is an all-pro cornerback and many Jets fans are excited about the potential of Buster Skrine and Marcus Williams. Depth, however, is something that head coach Todd Bowles loves to have. Cue Darryl Roberts.

Prior to signing with the Jets, he was drafted in the 7th round by the New England Patriots and was regarded by some as a steal. He flashed some potential in limited playing time but a wrist injury suffered in the preseason saw his season end before it even began. Now, the second-year cornerback out of Marshall has the ability to make a splash on a brand new team.

Roberts is an extremely explosive athlete.

He ran a 4.37, had a 39” vertical jump, and has tremendous all-around athleticism.

Roberts stands at 5’10” and weighs about 190 lbs but he also plays very physically despite being undersized.

His main problem is his lack of discipline and inconsistency.

These are two problems that Bowles is very well equipped at fixing is young cornerbacks. Bowles preaches discipline and hustle on every play to all his players and if Bowles is able to get the most out of Roberts, he could be a diamond in the rough.

Roberts is going to have a lot of talented veterans around him and that plus Bowles’ expertise with cornerbacks combined with what Roberts learned in New England is a recipe for an excellent addition to the Jets’ secondary. Plus not to mention, an already stout defense.
