Cowboys sign Mark Sanchez; Dak Prescott must never get hurt

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

In an effort to provide veteran depth behind rookie quarterback Dak Prescott, the Dallas Cowboys sign former first round pick Mark Sanchez after his release from the Denver Broncos.

The Dallas Cowboys are heading into the unknown when they kick off their regular season in just over a week. America’s Team will have a rookie quarterback at the helm after 36-year old starter Tony Romo suffered a back injury in the third preseason game against the Seattle Seahawks. Romo is expected to miss anywhere between four to ten weeks because of it.

Despite his excellent preseason, 2016 fourth round selection Dak Prescott out of Mississippi State is now slated to face the New York Football Giants on September 11th under center for the Cowboys with a total of 50 passing attempts under his belt as a professional. It’s a daunting task Dallas’ brass does not want the rookie facing without a veteran back-up. On Saturday, they got their man.

It is now being reported that the Cowboys have signed former Denver Bronco quarterback Mark Sanchez to a one-year deal worth approximately $2.5 million. It was a quick stop in the Mile High City for the former fifth overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. “Sanchise” infamously spent his first five years with the New York Jets, leading the team to the conference championship in his first two seasons in the league.

The 29-year old spent the last two seasons playing with the Philadelphia Eagles and head coach Chip Kelly, who was attempting to revitalize his career. But Kelly’s firing in December made Sanchez expendable, and he was promptly traded to the Peyton Manning-less Broncos this offseason for a conditional seventh round selection.

Heading into the preseason, Sanchez was the favorite to win the starting role for the world champion Broncos. But the veteran lost the job to relative unknown Trevor Siemian. After a reported attempt to trade him to the quarterback-needy Cowboys, Denver decided to release Sanchez on Saturday. The move saves the Broncos $4.5 million and they get their seventh round selection back from the Eagles.

The Cowboys now have an experienced veteran entrenched behind Prescott until Romo’s return. Sanchez has recorded 15,126 yards, 86 touchdowns and 84 interceptions in his seven year career. His combined completion percentage is a lowly 56.7%, having played in a total of 75 NFL games.

The player best known for the “butt-fumble” will now dawn the iconic Star in Dallas. It’s clear that Dak Prescott can never, ever get hurt.
