Cowboys tough call: Dak Prescott or a healthy Tony Romo?

The Dallas Cowboys have a tough decision coming soon choosing between rookie quarterback Dak Prescott or 36-year old veteran Tony Romo to start under center for America’s Team.

Two weeks into his first season, fourth round rookie quarterback Dak Prescott looks like the steal of April’s NFL Draft. So far, the former Mississippi State Bulldog has completed 47 of his 75 passes (62.7%) for 510 yards and one rushing touchdown. More importantly, Prescott doesn’t have a single turnover and is coming off his first victory, a road win over the NFC East Champions from last season, the Washington Redskins.

Although Prescott hasn’t scored a passing touchdown yet, his poise in the pocket and other intangibles have many believing the 23-year old is the future of the Cowboys franchise at the quarterback position. But Dak’s solid performances has some wondering what happens when veteran quarterback Tony Romo returns from his most recent back injury.

If Romo returned to play in Week Three, I think he’d undoubtedly be the starter. Although Prescott has played admirably in his first two starts, it hasn’t always been pretty. And his lack of passing touchdowns, although not always his fault, is a negative note.

But as Romo’s return is still yet unknown, the rookie is the starter for the immediate future. If Prescott continues to grow and starts stringing together victories, does the gap between him and Tony begin to disappear? I think the answer lies in how well the rookie plays combined with how the Cowboys win those games.

For example, when New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady took over for injured starter Drew Bledsoe in Week Two of the 2001 regular season, his initial two games as a starter were a bit shaky. Brady would go 1-1 in those contest and not record a single passing touchdown or  interception. But the now legendary passer won four of the Patriots next five games, throwing for 1,126 yards and 11 scores.

Brady’s play earned him the starting role over Bledsoe when he returned from injury. Prescott will need to do the same in Dallas. As of right now, I don’t believe the rookie has done enough to start over a healthy Tony Romo. But just like Brady, Prescott still has the opportunity to prove he should.
