Cowboys vs. Eagles: A rivalry renewed
By Chris Trevino
There are a few rivalries in the NFL that date back several decades and the Dallas Cowboys, Philadelphia Eagles rivalry is one of those. It’s a rivalry that goes from regular season games to playoff championship games. When the Cowboys play the Eagles, expect a little something extra that day. The extra little push in the back here, the chop block there, a little more facemask than usual over here, an occasional roughing the passer or a hit on a defenseless receiver in the middle of the field. September 20th and November 8th will be no different and the fire has already been lit.
The Cowboys travel to the Eagles nest in week 2 in a much anticipated matchup on September 20th. It will mark the 1st time the Cowboys have to deal with DeMarco Murray being on the opposite side of the sidelines. The silver and blue has changed to midnight green, black, charcoal and white. The iconic stars replaced with Eagle wings. The one thing we can expect to be a little different is the hostility levels and it’s due to Murray and his perceived to be replacement, Joseph Randle.
Randle was asked last week how he felt about the run game this year compared to last season and he said he felt like there was a lot of “meat still left on the bone.” Many people immediately took to social media and stirred up the pot a little bit. They all assumed Randle was saying Murray left a lot of yards on the field. And in some cases, headlines raved about a Randle and Murray beef about who can do better as the Cowboys starting running back. When word got back to Murray about Randle’s comment, he simply laughed and said “Hopefully he can taste some of that meat this year.”
I think what Randle meant was that with all this talk about Murray being gone and the run game not going to be the same, there are still some guys here that can get the job done. Obviously he was talking about himself but I think he was simply saying the run game is here to stay. With the type of offensive line that we have, another good running back will have a great opportunity to step up and showcase their abilities. Whether it is Randle, Darren McFadden, Lance Dunbar or the forgotten Ryan Williams, who I absolutely think was a stud last preseason; one of these guys is going to flourish behind this Pro Bowl of an O-line.
But of course most media prefers to interpret it as Randle taking a shot at Murray. And you know what…that’s fine with me. Murray leaving the Cowboys to sign with the Eagles this offseason still has me pretty amped for both matchups. I think most fans feel the same way. We’re counting down the days until our ‘Boys suit up against the Eagles and open up a can or 2. It’s just another log in an endless bonfire, another chapter in the Cowboys-Eagles rivalry. All we’re going to need come September 20th and November 8th is a little popcorn.
