Darius Slay wins NFC Defensive Player of the Week honor
It’s hard to believe it’s been over 15 years since it last happened, but it’s true. Lions cornerback Darius Slay is the first Detroit CB honored as NFC Player of the Week since 2000.

To put that into perspective, Slay himself was just 9 years old when Westbrook took the honors.
No Lions cornerback since, not Dre Bly or Rashean Mathis or Fernando Bryant or Chris Cash to name but a few, has been so honored.
Slay wins on the basis of an outstanding finish to Sunday’s home win over the Philadelphia Eagles. No. 23 in Honolulu Blue smacked the ball from Ryan Mathews’ arms to force a key fumble on one drive. The ensuing recovery set up Detroit’s go-ahead drive.

The Lions needed a big play, and Big Play Darius Slay delivered. That was enough to earn the cocksure corner NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
Here’s hoping Lions fans won’t have to wait 16 seasons for the next Lions cornerback honor…
