David Diehl predicts the Giants' first round pick

Published Apr. 28, 2015 9:52 a.m. ET

David Diehl has two Superbowl championships with the New York Giants after spending his entire 11-year career wit the team. Once upon a time, Diehl was a draft day gem. The Giants selected Diehl out of the University of Illinois in the fifth round of the 2003 NFL Draft with the 160th overall selection.

Now, Diehl offers his mock draft. Diehl ran through selections No. 1 through No. 8 before predicting that the Giants would select offensive lineman Brandon Scherff out of Iowa. Diehl broke down exactly why he believes Scherff will be the pick.

"The most ready offensive lineman is Brandon Scherff," Diehl told John Schmeelk of Giants.com. He' strong enough in the run game to move at the point of attack a defensive lineman and to anchor down against the power rush. He has the movement and hand placement in pass pro(tection) to redirect, punch, and anchor down against those big interior lineman."

"But the best thing he brings is competition. There will be a competition between Brandon Scherff and Justin Pugh at either the left guard position or the right tackle position."

Diehl was asked if he sees Scherff as the classic "mean streak" and "blue collar" offensive lineman that has become synonymous with what the Giants are looking for at the position.

"I see that he's a tough, physical, nasty player. He finishes guys. He's the pedigree of what you want in an offensive lineman. He is exactly the type of offensive lineman and the foundation that not only my group has had, but the foundation that the Giants have had, and what Pat Flaherty looks for in an offensive lineman."

Diehl had strong praise for Scherff and he does an excellent job connecting the dots on Scherff's skill set and what the Giants look for in an offensive lineman. Diehl joins former Giant Chris Snee in his praise of Scherff.

With just a few days remaining before we enter Thursday's draft, momentum is building for Scherff to be the Giants' first pick in the 2015 NFL Draft.
