Detroit Lions' Jim Caldwell: CB Rashean Mathis' production at 34 'uncommon'
Detroit Lions cornerback Rashean Mathis won't stop ticking. Turning 35 years old in August and entering his 13th NFL season, Mathis is still a solid starter in Detroit's secondary.
"It’s uncommon," Lions head coach Jim Caldwell said of Mathis' extended NFL lifespan, via Paula Pasche of The Oakland Press. That’s why you don’t see a number of guys his age that are still able to perform in this league. He’s an unusual guy, but I think that’s certainly a testament to the fact that he stays in tremendous shape. He takes care of his body and not only that, you know, God’s gift to him with a little bit more staying power than the next guy."
Before Mathis came to the Lions in 2013, he spent a decade in Jacksonville. The Jaguars selected the Bethune-Cookman product in the second-round of the 2003 NFL Draft. His lone Pro Bowl appearance came in 2006, when he recorded a career-high eight interceptions.
Mathis is a veteran leader in the classroom and on the field, Caldwell told The Oakland Press. His NFL experience benefits all his teammates, not just himself. Perhaps, one of the reasons why he has been able to play so long is because he loves competition so much.
"He’s a competitive guy at every phase," Caldwell said, per The Oakland Press. "He takes a few guys’ money too on the golf course from what I understand, but really a quality, quality guy."
Mathis was re-signed to a two-year deal worth $3.5 million this offseason and is slated to start opposite Darius Slay in 2015.
