Did the Los Angeles Rams Get the Timing Wrong On Firing Jeff Fisher?

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 4:59 p.m. ET

It’s fair to say there is a general consensus the Los Angeles Rams made the right decision to move on from head coach Jeff Fisher, but were they wrong on the timing of the decision?

Even if the Los Angeles Rams decided to hold off on the Jeff Fisher firing until after the season, they still would have a tough task to take on Thursday night against the Seattle Seahawks. Following the team’s pitiful performance on Sunday during their home loss to the Atlanta Falcons, there was little to say in defending Fisher’s job status. But the Rams did just that, and it could not have come at a more inopportune time.

On Thursday night, the Rams will be traveling to Seattle with the intention of earning their fourth-straight win against the Seahawks. As if this wasn’t a steep enough hill to climb, will be playing on a short week, which will be quite the challenge for new interim head coach John Fassel.

During an interview on Monday in which he was announced as the new interim head coach for Los Angeles, Fassel made it clear he’s inexperienced as it’s going to be interesting to watch him make the transition. Fassel sounded uncertain and unsure of himself when a reporter posed the question asking if he felt ready for the opportunity, in which he gave a response that made it seem like he was in over his head.

In that same press conference on Monday morning, Rams quarterback Jared Goff alluded to the guilt he and multiple players felt for the firing of Fisher. Not to mention later in the day, Todd Gurley mentioned the team just seemed to be going through the motions.

The team may have been better off waiting until the end of the season for the coaching change for the sake of their players and coaching chemistry, but the only thing they can do now is move forward with the decision. For all intents and purposes, let’s hope Los Angeles finds a way to be competitive in these final three games before beginning the offseason with a fresh start and a new leader.
