Edelman's Catch Falls Short Of New York Giants Tyree Or Manningham
Congratulations to the New England Patriots for their fifth Super Bowl title. The Pats comeback was certainly epic. But keep in mind that epic comebacks require help from the opposition. The biggest favor came when the Atlanta Falcons botched an interception and allowed Julian Edelman to grab a first-down out of thin air late in the contest. Because Tom Brady’s initial pass was underthrown, Edelman’s catch pales in comparison to plays made by the New York Giants in Super Bowl XLII and Super Bowl XLVI.
Super Bowl XLII
No one should dispute that Tom Brady’s intended pass to Julian Edelman was underthrown. Otherwise it would not have been deflected. In the rush to canonize Brady in the wake of the Super Bowl victory, folks act like it was planned.

Frankly, the catch was great, but the play was lucky.
Now, both ends of the Eli Manning to David Tyree play were football execution. The ability to trap and hold a football against one’s helmet demonstrates quality hands. This is the same thing we can give Edelman credit for; great hands. But Manning’s pass was on the money.
As you recall, Pats safety Rodney Harrison tried to rip the ball away from Tyree to no avail. No luck there, just some good mano y mano play. Tyree won the battle.
No shame for Rodney Harrison, except he gets to lament it for the rest of his life.
End of story, Manning-to-Tyree: great catch and great play.
Super Bowl XLVI
Next, Mario Manningham’s catch in Super Bowl XLVI was precision execution with a little more than three and a half minutes left in that game. In fact, Manning’s pass was incredible, even if his detractors continue to spew nonsense. The catch was equally precise. Manningham caught and held onto a pass as he was being drilled by Patrick Chung.
In addition, he kept both feet in bounds.
Great pass, great catch, great execution. No woulda, shoulda, coulda by the Patriots, they were out-executed.
Giants beat the Pats again, 21-17 in Indianapolis.
Super Bowl LI
First and foremost, Edelman’s catch was a great one, but it was necessitated by Brady’s poor pass. In addition, there were multiple misplays by the Atlanta Falcons on the play. This dynamic runs counter to both the Tyree and Manningham catches that were well played by New England’s defense.
Revisionist history will probably rear its ugly head in a few years, and give Brady much of the credit. In fact, how can you have the game-winning touchdown and set the Super record for receptions, and not win the MVP award.

Because its all Brady, all-the-time.
Even Brady’s response reeked of entitlement. “We’ve been on the other end of a few of those catches, and tonight we got it,” Brady said according to USA Today on Feb. 6, 2017.
No doubt he’s a great player, but he puts his pants on one leg at a time. And the theatrics by his model wife, Gisele Bündchen, were more about her, her, her.
Beauty is only skin deep and Gisele proves that time and again.
It’s a team game, but not in the eyes of the Brady’s. All them, all the time. It’s hard to determine if Jay-Z and Beyonce are the most serving couple of all time, or is it Tom and Gisele?
But at least she didn’t have to spew out venom like she did in 2012, when another Brady misfire could not be hauled in by Wes Welker. No Gisele, Edelman bailed out your man!
So just to be clear, great catch by Edelman, lousy pass by Brady. So when you reference the play, call it the Edelman catch, Brady deserves zero credit.
