Falcons sign CB Robert Alford to four-year extension with $21 million guaranteed
The Atlanta Falcons have one of the top young cornerbacks in the game today in Desmond Trufant, but they’ve found their long-term partner for him on the other side. On Thursday, the team announced it has signed Robert Alford to a four-year extension.
According to Adam Schefter, the deal is worth $38 million with $21 million of that guaranteed.
That may not seem like an eye-popping contract on the surface, but consider this: His reported $21 million guaranteed is the ninth-most for a cornerback in NFL history. Alford deserves every penny, especially for the way he’s stepped up in Trufant’s absence.
Since Week 9, Alford has allowed just 12 receptions. Only Richard Sherman and Darrelle Revis have allowed fewer, according to Pro Football Focus. This season, he has 47 tackles with 12 passes defense and two interceptions.
In his four-year career, Alford has picked off nine passes, batted 47 and made 171 tackles. He’s not a prototypical corner at just 5-foot-10, but he’s performed like one of late, and he was rewarded with a lucrative contract.
We have signed CB Robert Alford to a four-year contract extension.
