For now, the Denver Broncos have two No. 1 quarterbacks

Denver Broncos fans looking for clues as to who will be there team’s starting quarterback this season will have to wait a little while longer.

Three days ahead of their preseason opener against Chicago, the Broncos released a depth chart that has Mark Sanchez and Trevor Siemian as co-No. 1 quarterbacks. The only thing that seems certain is that first-round pick Paxton Lynch is at No. 3.

Sanchez and Siemian have been splitting repetitions since the start of training camp in their battle to replace the retired Peyton Manning as the starting QB for the defending Super Bowl champs. Sanchez, 29, was acquired in an offseason trade after presumed Manning successor Brock Osweiler left for Houston as a free agent, and the 2015 seventh-round pick Siemian has surprised some observers by keeping pace with the veteran.

The old saying goes that if you have two starting QBs, you don’t have any starting QBs, and that continues to be the case here until one of these two takes the lead in one of the most watched camp competitions in the league. Regardless of who wins out, he'll likely be little more than a placeholder for Lynch as he develops. But the Broncos proved last year that they have a good enough defense to win a Super Bowl with lackluster quarterback play.
