Geno Smith Gets Last Chance With New York Jets

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith has been up and down in his time with the New York Jets. But now, he finds himself with one more chance to be the player the team drafted in 2013.

New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith was awful in his first two years in the NFL. Then he was on his way to year three, when players start to get it if they’re good enough to be picked so high. He had his best camp to that point and led the competition to start at quarterback.

But then came the drama where his jaw was broken by teammate IK Enemkpali and he’s out. Ryan Fitzpatrick would then take over and have a historically great year for a Jets quarterback. Then  suddenly, he believed he was a franchise quarterback until this season started.

Fitzpatrick has played so badly, the Jets are probably looking at him the same way they looked at Smith last year. Bryce Petty isn’t all the way back from a shoulder injury and Christian Hackenberg isn’t ready yet. So as fate would have it, the Jets have to turn back to Smith.

At his press conference Wednesday, head coach Todd Bowles said, “Smith is our starter right now. We’ll see how things go down the line. Right now we’ll take it week to week.”

After getting knocked out by a fellow employee and losing his job he gets another chance at it. Ironically the same guy that replaced him is the same guy he’s replacing. Either way, Smith better do something with this chance because it’s his last one in New York.
