Jaguars GM Caldwell promises 'aggressive' offseason

Caldwell noted the Jaguars have the neccessary resources to improve the team, adding that while the defense needs help, the pieces of top-flight offense are already in place with core that includes quarterback Blake Bortles and receivers Allen Robinson and Allen Hurns.

“We feel like it’s easier in this league to fix a defense than it is an offense,” Caldwell said. “It’s not like we don’t have any pieces on defense. We do have good players. We have a mountain of cap space and eight draft picks.”

Last season the Jaguars added a number of free agents, led by tight end Julius Thomas, cornerback Davon House, defensive end Jared Odrick and right tackle Jermey Parnell. Caldwell said the Jaguars are in a position to continuing spending this March in order to get the players they want.

“I don’t know if we’ll set the market, but we’ll have our targets of guys that we really want and we’ll do whatever we need to get them," Caldwell said.

The general manager added that the team is once again likely to try to fill holes on defense and other areas of need through free agency to allow greater flexibility in April's draft.

One departure from recent years though, will be a willingness to sign players in their early 30s. Caldwell said the Jaguars feel they're close to competing for championships and are open to adding older players with an eye towards winning immediately.
