Jaguars still mulling starting center choice

Published Aug. 24, 2015 12:25 a.m. ET

Earlier in training camp, Jacksonville Jaguars head coach Gus Bradley said a winner in the team's competition for the starting center job between Luke Bowanko and Stefen Wisniewski could be decided before the Jags' third preseason game.

With that third game approaching on Friday against the Detroit Lions, Bradley said there was no guarantee the team would name a starter this week.

Bowanko started Jacksonville's preseason opener against the Pittsburgh Steelers, while Wisniewski started Saturday's game against the New York Giants.  Wisniewski played 30 snaps against the Giants, while Bowanko played 28.

“We felt Wisniewski played well,” Bradley said, per the team's official website. “He played more physical again. He really did a good job with our protections along with (QB) Blake (Bortles). He did some good things, as did Bo(wanko).”

Bradley said it was possible the team could choose a starter prior to Friday's game, but added the two players may well share first-team snaps.

"We want to try to stay true it," Bradley said. "Hopefully, maybe sometime this week we’ll take a look at it even further and talk about personnel and see if we have an idea what direction we want to take.”

Bowanko started 14 games as a rookie last season. Wisniewski joined the Jaguars as a free agent in the offseason after starting 61 games over four season with the Oakland Raiders.
