Jamaal Charles Injury Update: Chiefs RB listed as doubtful

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Kansas City Chiefs running back Jamaal Charles isn’t expected to make his season debut on Sunday against the New York Jets as he continues to recover from injury.

The Kansas City Chiefs will likely be without star running back Jamaal Charles in their Week 3 matchup against the New York Jets, according to Jason La Canfora of CBS Sports.

La Canfora notes that Charles is listed as doubtful and not out, but the odds of him playing are slim. Kansas City has designated Charles as doubtful for the first two weeks of the season, and he is yet to make his season debut.

Charles is still recovering from a torn right ACL he suffered in a mid-October game against the Chicago Bears. The eighth-year running back out of Texas also missed much of the 2011 season with a torn ACL in his right knee.

Head coach Andy Reid hinted last week that Charles was nearly ready to play, and he has at least been working with the first-team offense in practice this week. Any setback would be of major concern to the Chiefs, as Charles is 29 years old and has suffered a few injuries before.

The Chiefs could use Charles back sooner than later, as they’ve looked shaky in a 1-1 start and face an uphill battle to catch the Denver Broncos in the AFC West. Kansas City managed just 12 points and 291 yards of total offense in last week’s loss to the Houston Texans, and things won’t get any easier this week with the stout Jets front seven coming to town.

Spencer Ware figures to remain the primary back in Charles absence. The third-year back out of LSU has been productive in two games this season with 21 carries for 127 yards and a touchdown. Charcandrick West may also get a few more touches after carrying the ball six times for 61 yards against Houston.
