Jason Pierre-Paul says doctors originally wanted to amputate his hand
Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul is back on the field, and while he hasn't quite recaptured his best form, the fact that he's come back to play is impressive in itself, given that he lost his index finger and the tip of his thumb in a July fireworks accident. Pierre-Paul, however, says it appeared at first that it may be much worse.
"Even the doctors counted me out," Pierre-Paul told the New York Post's Steve Serby. "They were like, 'Yeah, we're gonna have to cut his whole hand off.'
"I just told the doctor not to cut my hand and passed out."
Pierre-Paul said he wasn't scared when the accident took place.
"It wasn't scary at all," said Pierre-Paul. "I just went straight to the hospital. Didn't panic, no nothing, I just went straight to the hospital.
"It wasn't painful at all. It was no pain, no nothing at the time. I was just like, 'I gotta get my hand treated.'"
Pierre-Paul makes himself sound pretty nonchalant about the incident in the immediate aftermath (especially when you take this incredible disturbing photo into account), but it's good that doctors were able to salvage his hand. Only four months after the accident, JPP is playing football again, and kudos to him for that.
