Jerry Jones: 'Superman' Dez Bryant targeting Week 7 return
By Jason Rowan
Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones colorfully suggested Dez Bryant has superhero-like recovery powers to praise how quickly the wide receiver is healing from surgery.
"Dez, of course, is Superman," Jones said Tuesday on 105.3 The Fan, viaThe Dallas Morning News. "I say that without a smile. He heals extraordinarily quick. His procedure went well. He's sound with the procedure. Everything they did, by the way, the graft all that, it enhances his chance to get out there. I think he's got a chance to do it after the bye."
The surgery, performed Sept. 14, involved a bone graft and a screw being inserted into Bryant's right foot to repair a fractured fifth metatarsal, was believed to have a minimum recovery time of six weeks, if not longer. If the Cowboys' projected timetable plays out, Bryant could return to practice during the team's bye week, well in time for a Week 7 road game against the New York Giants.
Jones' comments echoed sentiments expressed Monday by Cowboys executive vice president Stephen Jones, who alluded to the team's timeframe for Bryant before adding, "There's been no setbacks. We continue to look at it. We had another examination there at the end of the week last week. We expect him to do a little more each week."
The season for the Cowboys (2-2) has understandably taken a turn for the worse in the wake of the absences of Bryant and Tony Romo. Other notable injuries -- including Lance Dunbar (out for the season) and Jason Witten's presence on the injury report -- has hampered the effectiveness of the Cowboys offense. In other words, the sooner the stars can return to the field, the better.
Further, in light of how Jones went from excessive praise of Brandon Weeden to referring to the quarterback as "limited" following the team's loss to the New Orleans Saints, the owner -- after referring to Bryant as Superman -- probably is hoping that Romo has the recuperative powers of Wolverine at this point.
