Jets invite cousin of Odell Beckham for rookie camp tryout
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. — Terron Beckham is getting a chance to follow in his famous cousin's football footsteps.
The New York Jets invited the running back, a distant relative of Giants star wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr., to attend their rookie minicamp next week on a tryout basis.
Mike Celli, the agent for Terron Beckham, announced on Twitter on Saturday night after the NFL draft concluded that the Jets offered his client an opportunity.
The 23-year-old Beckham, who last played football in high school, also posted a picture of himself on Instagram , shirtless and slightly covered by a Jets logo graphic.
"What a time, to be alive," Beckham wrote. "Your boy is blessed. I am so thankful for this opportunity. GOD IS SO GOOD MAN ... I am shaking right now."
He also thanked the Jets for the opportunity to get on the field next week.
"You will not regret it I swear," Beckham wrote. "Going to be a workhorse."
The powerfully built Beckham, listed at 5-foot-11 and 223 pounds, has been a personal trainer the last few years. But he had the urge to pursue a football career like his cousin.
He had an impressive performance at an NFL combine-like pro day at TEST Sports Club in New Jersey in early April in front of a handful of teams, including the Jets and Giants. According to published reports, Beckham ran the 40-yard dash in 4.47 seconds, had a 44 1/2-inch vertical jump and bench-pressed 225 pounds 36 times.
Beckham had previously become a bit of an internet sensation with several videos he posted of his eye-popping gym workouts.
The Jets' three-day rookie minicamp, which includes drafted, undrafted and tryout players, begins Friday.
