Jets reportedly ask Ferguson for big pay cut to sign Ryan Fitzpatrick
The New York Jets are trying to free some cap space with the hopes of re-signing Ryan Fitzpatrick. And it appears the team is asking one of its star players to take a pay cut.
The Jets have approached left tackle D'Brickashaw Ferguson with the hopes of getting him to agree, the New York Daily News reported Wednesday. Ferguson will count $14.1 million against the 2016 salary cap. If Ferguson agrees to the giveback, the team would use the savings to further pursue Fitzpatrick, according to the report.
The team, according to the report, is hoping to get Ferguson to give back about $4 million to $5 million. He's scheduled to make $10.4 million next season.
Ferguson, 32, has never missed a game due to injury during his 10-year career. He made three straight Pro Bowls from 2009 to 2011.
Fitzpatrick, 33, has yet to be signed despite throwing for 3,905 yards with 31 touchdowns and 15 interceptions last season, helping the Jets to a 10-6 record.
