Jets' Sheldon Richardson rips media for reporting he guaranteed win over Patriots

Sheldon Richardson is upset with the media over how it was reported that he supposedly guaranteed the New York Jets would beat the New England Patriots on Sunday.

The Jets defensive end took to Twitter Thursday evening to blast the reporting.

It’s interesting how Richardson appears to take a shot at NFL commissioner Roger Goodell in the tweet, presumably regarding how the league makes it mandatory for players to speak with the media. Considering he labeled the report as “BS,” it’s reasonable to assume Richardson feels his words were manipulated to sensationalize a story.

Richardson’s actual comments, originally featured in a Metro New York report that exploded and disseminated elsewhere, dances around the possibility the Jets can and should notch a huge win over the Patriots, but only if the team plays well, a reasonable assertion.

“This is going to be another win for us. We’ll let you all write the columns about validating wins and stuff like that. This is going to be another win in the win column if we go out there and execute and do what we’re supposed to do,” Richardson said. “We’re going to be up in the division, that’s how we’re going to look at it. We’re going to be the front-runners, that’s how we look at it.”

While a logical leap arguably can be made to assume Richardson was in a subtle way guaranteeing victory, he did not technically do so, as there were qualifiers included in his comments.

As noted by Pro Football Talk, the original headline of the article was “Sheldon Richardson Guarantees a Jets Win at Patriots.” It was later changed to “Sheldon Richardson Confident in a Jets Win at Patriots,” but as the Jets defensive end clearly sees it, the damage already had been done.
