Jets should avoid drafting a quarterback early

According to Albert Einstein, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result.  Well, the New York Jets should avoid the insane idea of drafting a quarterback on Thursday or Friday in the 2017 NFL Draft.

The New York Jets made the mistake of drafting Geno Smith in 2014 when there was no help to make him better.  As we have seen, it blew up in their faces, and he’s a bust. The team should be in complete rebuild mode…again.  It’s unfortunate for a fan-base that’s clamoring for a Super Bowl appearance, but that’s where the team is now.

Quarterback should be the last position on the team’s mind, period.  It would ruin a quarterback’s potential to be stuck with this team. There are way too many holes to fill.

First, they need to think about drafting offensive linemen, especially at center.  Nick Mangold is on injured reserve for the first time in his career.  Prior to this year, he had missed only three games in 10 seasons.

Second, the back end of the defense needs a lot of help.  This draft is stocked with first round talent at cornerback.  It’s a major area of need and again, a much higher priority than quarterback.

Finally, the Jets need help on the second level of the defense.  There’s plenty of depth at inside linebacker, especially in Rounds 2 and 3.

The 2017 NFL Draft is definitely top-heavy with quarterback talent.  Deshaun Watson and DeShone Kizer are the best ones in the draft. In addition to this, the Jets may or may not need one.  We don’t really know what Bryce Petty can do, and may not by the time the draft begins.

We are witnessing in Indianapolis what can happen when you draft a first round quarterback and not have the pieces around him to succeed.  The Jets would be foolish to want to end up in that situation.
