Jets WR Brandon Marshall will 'stand on the table' to end the franchise tag
The franchise tag has never been something players like. It offers them no long-term financial guarantees and puts them in a prove-it situation where a significant injury or down year can cost them millions.
In recent years, the tag has come under serious scrutiny from stars who have had it placed on them. Von Miller threatened to sit out the entire 2016 season if he couldn’t come to terms on a long-term deal with the Broncos after being franchise tagged months earlier. Eric Berry of the Chiefs still hasn’t signed his franchise tag after failing to sign an extension.
Players have been calling for the franchise tag to be outlawed, but that won’t happen until the collective bargaining agreement is up for negotiation down the line. When that time does come, Jets receiver Brandon Marshall will be vocal.
Marshall specifically references Alshon Jeffery’s situation. The Chicago Bears receiver, a former teammate of Marshall's, is set to play under the franchise tag, which is partly due to the fact that he’s been unable to remain healthy in the NFL. The Bears were reluctant to reward him with a long-term deal, forcing him to prove his worth in 2016.
The next time the NFLPA has a chance to bring an end to the franchise tag will be after the 2020 season. At that point, there will be numerous players lining up to support the campaign. For now, the tag is something they have to live with.
