Jimmy Garoppolo thought the Texans might draft him

Updated Mar. 4, 2020 2:32 p.m. ET

Jimmy Garopplo told the media this week that he believes the Houston Texans wanted to draft him back in 2014.

Garoppolo says the Texans showed an interest in him when he was coming out of Eastern Illinois. He met with the Texans during the pre-draft process which helped him know they were doing their homework on him.

Head coach Bill O’Brien wanted to draft Garoppolo, but the Patriots ended up beating them to the punch after taking Garoppolo in the second round.

“I knew (The Texans) needed a quarterback that year and they ended up taking Tom Savage,” Garoppolo said, per CBS Houston. “It was a possibility, but I didn’t know what was going to happen.”

The Texans used the first pick of the second round on offensive guard Xavier Su’a-filo and with the 30th pick in that round (62nd overall) the Patriots took Garoppolo.

Of course later on the Texans used the 135th pick and took quarterback Tom Savage in the fourth round.

I wonder if O’Brien and the Texans had known the Patriots were going to draft Garoppolo late in the second round if they would have taken him instead of Su’a-filo.  All we can do is sit back and wonder what if.

Garoppolo knows that multiple teams are interested in trading for him.

“The talks have started, I haven’t talked about it or anything, but it sounds like they’re going on.  I’ve been asked a lot about it (Monday).”

It’s unfortunate, but the Texans’ hands are tied when it come to trying to acquire Jimmy Garoppolo this offseason because of all the money they have invested into Brock Osweiler.
