Josh McCown listed as starter, still not cleared to practice
By Will Gibson
Will it be one start and done for Johnny Manziel? Based on the (unofficial and nonbinding) depth chart released by the Browns Tuesday morning, it could be, as Josh McCown is listed as the starter.
Johnny Manziel played well in the Browns’ 28-14 victory over the Tennessee Titans, his first start of the 2015 season. He completed 8-of-15 passes for 172 yards and two touchdowns, both of which came onlong-range strikes to Travis Benjamin.
Pettine said Monday that he and the Browns coaches would discuss whether or not Manziel should keep the starting job.
“We’re going to meet on that tonight. To me, that’s the standard, it’s our weekly meeting where we evaluate every positon and where are we but until Josh is cleared there’s not much thought process there. Just because he is the starter right now with the fact that Josh is out but we’ll have the ‘what if?’ discussion tonight, see where that takes us.”
Perhaps the most important thing to remember is this: Pettine doesn’t put a whole lot of stock in depth charts. From Sept. 10:
“Let me walk you through how we do our depth chart: (Vice president of communications) Pete (John-Baptiste) types it up and walks into my office. He says, ‘How’s it look?’ Sometimes I look at it, sometimes I don’t. It is usually a very cursory glance. I say, ‘It looks good.’ I don’t put a lot of stock in depth charts, neither should you.
