Kaepernick's Malcolm X-Castro T-Shirt resurfaces as 49ers face Miami

Colin Kaepernick has consistently made waves through his off-field activism and antics. That’s about the only thing he’s done consistently all season. With the 49ers visit to Miami this weekend, Kaps decision to wear a Fidel Castro shirt earlier this season

Colin Kaepernick, the quasi-starting quarterback of the San Francisco 49ers, has made headline after headline this season — but not for football.

Despite making a few good plays from time to time, Kaepernick does not look like a starting quarterback and may be looking for a new home next season. He appears much more interested in making waves off the field than on it.

This week has been no different.

In a mandatory postgame press conference earlier this season, Kaepernick wore a T-Shirt covered with photos of Malcolm X and Fidel Castro meeting.

With Miami hosting the 49ers this weekend, and with Kaepernick’s calls for awareness of oppression, the Miami Herald’s Armando Salguero brought up the shirt in a conference call with the maligned QB. A tense back-and-forth ensued.

Now, we here at Niner Noise do not enjoy engaging in political discussion and wish to avoid turning any articles into political opinion pieces. That is not what this is. Rather, this is an article that intends to point out that Kaepernick’s protests — and some side effects of them, perhaps intentional, perhaps not — could bring forth even more vitriol in a city filled with Cuban immigrants.

Whatever your opinion of Kaepernick’s antics off the field, a display seeming to promote the former Cuban leader could create tensions on both sides, especially as Fidel Castro passed away late Friday night.

Personally, I could care less about anything Kaepernick says off the field. Free speech is an American Right that we should cherish, whether we agree or not.

I just wish Kap could learn how to play quarterback.
