Keenan Allen Carted Off the Field with Knee Injury

Published Jun. 30, 2017 6:28 p.m. ET

Despite going up 21-3 in the first half over the Kansas City Chiefs, the San Diego Chargers are scared that they may have just lost Keenan Allen for an extended period of time

Running a post-route down the left side of the field, Keenan Allen fell to the ground as he was cutting across the middle of the field. His right knee buckled without any contact, and the star wide receiver was carted off in tears.

For a team in San Diego that failed to live up to expectations last year, losing Allen this early could be devastating.

The wide receiver had already accumulated a team-high six catches for 65 yards prior to his injury.

Keenan Allen missed several games last year after suffering a kidney injury. Despite that, the Chargers signed Allen to a four-year extension worth $45 million heading into the season.

Kelvin Benjamin is the only wide receiver on the Chargers roster with extended playing experience. San Diego released James Jones in the preseason, so bringing him back into the building should not be too difficult.

A bright spot for the Chargers offense was Melvin Gordon, who scored two touchdowns in the first half. The Chargers first round pick from 2015 missed time with injury last season, but appears to be fully healthy and ready to contribute.

Several veteran wide receivers remain available in free agency, such as Roddy White, Rueben Randle, Brian Hartline, and Dwayne Bowe. San Diego will certainly be looking at practice squads around the NFL to see if they can find a diamond in the rough.
