Kirk Cousins Shoved Volunteer Ref at Charity Flag Football Game (Video)

Always fiery, Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins may have gone too far at a charity flag football game on Saturday.

If there’s one thing proven about impending free agent and Washington Redskins quarterback Kirk Cousins, it’s his fiery demeanor when it comes to the game. From his explicit emotions on the field to his “You like that!” expressions after the game, he’s never been one to keep calm. However, there’s a time and place for everything and Cousins would be wise to keep that in mind.

On Saturday during Super Bowl 51 weekend, Cousins was competing in a flag football game for charity. Trailing by five points with less than a minute remaining in the fourth quarter, he was trying to complete one more drive to take a last-second lead and win. That’s when things went downhill for the Redskins signal-caller.

Cousins threw a strike down the middle of the field, but the receiver was ruled down short of the goal-line. The team hustled down with the clock running to try and get what was likely the final play off. As the official tried to set the ball, though, an opposing player swatted the ball away. Cousins was incensed over it and got in a volunteer referee’s face trying to get him to call a penalty. Then he went way too far as he pushed the official in frustration:

Yeah, you can’t do that in the NFL—but it looks even worse for Kirk Cousins in that type of environment. Even if you’re a competitive person, there’s no excuse for this.

According to Deadspin, who spoke to the official who was pushed, the volunteer said that he wasn’t calling that penalty because Cousins didn’t realize that there was another flag thrown that would’ve allowed another play. What’s more, he added that Cousins never apologized and threw shade at the quarterback’s character.

For a player that’s likely set to make a ton of money as a free agent this offseason, this isn’t a great way to start marketing yourself to teams around the league. Perhaps this will blow over and won’t factor into any negotiations. Even if that’s the case, it doesn’t make this instance any more acceptable.
