Lions cornerback Nevin Lawson says NFL told team that 66-yard penalty was a mistake
It was reportedly the costliest NFL penalty in at least the past 15 years, but it sounds like a flag should not have been thrown.
Detroit Lions cornerback Nevin Lawson, who was called for the 66-yard pass-interference penalty, told ESPN that the league informed the Lions that the referees made a mistake last Sunday.
Lawson was flagged on the play in which Packers wideout Trevor Davis tripped during the route in the second quarter. Green Bay scored on the drive in its 34-27 win.
According to ESPN Stats & Information, the penalty was the longest since at least 2001, eclipsing a 60-yard pass-interference penalty on the Browns in a game against the Ravens in 2010.
"It's definitely frustrating because you get that call wrong," Lawson said. "The worst part about it is that it affected that drive, and we gave up a touchdown, you know what I'm saying? So we can't get that back.
"So the only thing we get is an apology, so it's frustrating. But like I said, we got to continue to play and move on."
