Loyal to the end? Walker on board with Trump presidential bid
Herschel Walker knows a thing or two about Donald Trump.
Before he rushed for more than 8,000 yards over 11 seasons in the NFL, the 1982 Heisman Trophy winner didn’t begin his professional career in the NFL but rather the New Jersey Generals of the USFL, with whom he spent three seasons. For those final two seasons, the Generals were owned by The Donald.
Now that the billionaire businessman has captured the attention of the American public like never before in his pursuit of the Republican nomination for the 2016 presidential election, Walker was recently asked about his thoughts on Trump’s White House bid.
And though the USFL is long dead, Walker’s loyalty to his former boss apparently isn’t.
"There's not a doubt in my mind right now he is my front-runner," Walker told Josh Peter of USA TODAY Sports. "I'm not going to say anything negative about him because it's not true."
And much like his public career and, thus far, his political aspirations, Trump was a winner with Walker. The season before Trump showed up, the Generals were 6-12. In the two seasons under Trump, the team was a combined 25-11 with two playoff appearances. Walker would win one league MVP and finish as the USFL’s all-time leader in rushes, rushing yards and rushing touchdowns.
"(Trump) wanted to win and he was prepared to go out and do whatever it took to win," Walker told Peter. "He was a guy that always did what he said he was going to do."
Walker supports Trump for his business experience, anti-establishment platform and idea to build a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border, according to USA TODAY Sports, but he is not in favor of deporting 11 million undocumented immigrants. Rather, Walker said, he supports a plan for enabling immigrants to earn citizenship.
When it comes to Trump’s likeability and family values, Walker noted that Trump has been married three times but added, “No matter what, he is a good man. … Everybody has their faults.”
And he added that he thinks having a Washington outsider with Trump’s background in real estate development is what the country needs.
"When are we going to get back to what's best for this country?" Walker told USA TODAY Sports. "I think that's what's Donald is pushing to do."
