The Miami Dolphins are an anomaly. They have a decent roster, yet they continue to put up bad results. This offseason they need to find a coach that will turn their potential into results. It starts with the offensive line. Ryan Tannehill takes a beating week in and week out and the constant pressure turns into him making bad decisions. He had a chance to win the game for the Dolphins on four straight plays in the final minute of the game. On fourth and goal he only had one player on the offensive line block for him. The rest got beat and Tannehill got trounced on by three Colts giving Indianapolis the game.
Lamar Miller has proven to be an effective running back, he just hasn’t been consistent this season. Next year with a more consistent offensive coordinator him and rookie Jay Ajayi should make for a strong one two punch. Jarvis Landry is an elite receiver. He caught his 100th reception of the season Sunday, becoming the first Dolphin receiver to do so. DeVante Parker caught a deep ball on a good throw by Tannehill giving a glimpse of his long threat ability, something they drafted him to help Tannehill extend the field. The only setback on the offense is the offensive line. It would not be surprising for the Dolphins to draft some new players, pick some up in free agency and have the only returning starter be center Mike Pouncey. Also, a new coordinator that can make them work as a more cohesive unit in both the pass and run game wouldn’t be so bad.
On defense their run defense has let them down again. After Matt Hasselbeck went out of the game the Dolphins let third-string quarterback Charlie Whitehurst be the one to beat them. It looks like the Dolphins are in for a completely new coaching staff and potentially a new general manager going into the 2016 season. They should look for a more defensive minded head coach that can recruit a strong offensive coordinator. Something similar to what Minnesota did bringing in Mike Zimmer at head coach and having Norv Turner as the offensive coordinator. They have turned that team around and both sides of the ball are doing well. The Dolphins’ ownership should look to teams like Minnesota as an example for how to be successful moving forward today.
It’s sad to see a season with such high expectations go down the drain, but this week highlighted all of the Dolphins’ woes they’ve been dealing with all season and it’s finally time to say maybe 2016 will be their year.
