Mike Zimmer on safety position: 'It's kind of a fluid situation'
Minnesota Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer is still searching for answers at the safety position.
Against the San Francisco 49ers on Monday night, Andrew Sendejo started next to Harrison Smith at safety. Then, in the second half, Sendejo was replaced by Robert Blanton. Neither player was particularly impressive.
"It's kind of a fluid situation," Zimmer said about Minnesota's safety situation, per Matt Vensel of the Star-Tribune.
Zimmer told the Star-Tribune that he'd prefer a safety who makes the "smart" play instead of going for the "spectacular" play. When asked about the possibility of starting second-year pro Antone Exum, the head coach didn't sound too keen on the idea.
"He’s a possibility if he can ever figure out what to do," Zimmer said, via the Star-Tribune. "Once he figures out what to do, he can be a part of that discussion."
Zimmer and the Vikings are under pressure to find a solution. They already have one of the NFL's top safeties in Smith, but the unit is subpar without a viable starter opposite him.
