New NFL policy could strip teams of draft picks for violating concussion protocol

The NFL and NFLPA reached an agreement on a new procedure to enforce the league's concussion protocol, the NFL announced Monday.

The new policy will discipline teams that fail to follow the concussion protocol, including club fines and possible forfeiture of draft picks. 

According to the NFL's press release, the joint agreement will help ensure that players are receiving care that reflects the most up-to-date medical consensus and that a "strict and fair process" will be followed to investigate any incidents.

A first violation can result in a fine of up to $150,000, with minimum fines of at least $100,000 for additional violations. If commissioner Roger Goodell determines aggravating circumstances, a team will be fined a minimum of $50,000.

Teams could also be forced to forfeit draft picks if Goodell finds that a club failed to follow the protocol due to competitive considerations.
